On October 16, 1945, Judy Garland pre-recorded “D’Ya Love Me?” for the biopic about composer Jerome Kern titled “Till The Clouds Roll By.“ Garland was a guest star in the film, appearing as stage legend Marilyn Miller in two musical numbers, “Look For The Silver Lining” and “Sunny/Who?” After rehearsing and filming the big production number “Who?” Garland went into rehearsals and filming of the “Sunny” sequence which was a reimagining of Miller’s big stage success of the same name. Garland’s last day of work on the film, November 7, 1945, was devoted to the ultimately deleted “D’Ya Love Me?” number.
“D’Ya Love Me?” was intended to be a part of the circus-themed “Sunny” sequence, with the song “Sunny” segueing into “D’Ya Love Me?” rather than into “Who?” as in the final cut of the film. The silent footage survives. Warner Home Video presented an edited version of the sequence on the DVD, including the silent sections which would have had the dialogue and foley effects dubbed in later.
