In many water turtles, the males have very long nails on the front legs, which they use to fan the female. Country dwellers chase each other, the males biting the females. This aggressive behavior occurs in more reptiles such as the lizards, which hold the female with its mouth during mating. For turtles, however, biting the male is rewarded with better access to the female’s cloaca. A turtle is simply a shield with a body in it, which is similar to a balloon: if one side is pressed, the other side bulges out.
