The watch is manufactured entirely in Japan as denoted by small printing on its dial and its SBSA reference number. It appears that Seiko is going for formal & sporty with this design and it definitely achieves it, specially with this Specialist watch. 00:37 First Look While the SBSA027 is not slim by any means, on the wrist it wears quite well and does not feel oversized at all. Generally, I prefer watches closer to 40mm but since this watch does not have a bracelet and the proportions are well executed, it fits similar to other 40mm watches that I’ve worn. 01:30 Case Dimensions & Details The official dimensions of this Seiko SBSA027 are as follows: - diameter - 46mm from lug to lug - thick - Strap size (between the lugs) is 22mm I measured these in the video with calipers and found them to be exactly correct. The blackout theme of this Seiko dive watch makes it a flexible platform for different strap styles. 02:25 Case & Bezel Details The case on this Seiko 5 Sports SBSA027 is stainless steel with a dual-finish: the top is satin-finished and the flanks, including the crown guards, are high polish. Moreover, the lugs have lug holes for trouble-free strap changes. The bezel is also polished and has a textured outer brim to aid in its rotation. The “click“ of the unidirectional diver’s bezel is also quite nice. The bezel has a black metal insert with silver markings. 03:35 Watch Face & Crystal The silver-on-black theme of the bezel scale is also encountered in the internal rehaut of the watch which has silver printed minute markings on a raised minute track. The hour indices are applied onto the dial and boast a polished finish with white luminous fills. The hands at center also possess the same polished/white fill construction. Both of these elements contain green Seiko LumiBrite luminous material for legibility in low-light conditions. Lastly, the seconds hand has a metal component that is counterbalanced by a “lollipop“ style dot that also has luminous. 04:40 MADE IN JAPAN Under the 6 o’clock index is some small printing that reads MADE IN JAPAN. This same model is available under a different reference, SRPE21, when it is not made in Japan. There is no mechanical difference between these two models and the only aesthetic differences are the small printing on the dial and on the crystal caseback. Made in Japan watches are potentially more rare and usually command a premium on the second hand market. 06:55 Black Silicone Fused Strap w/ Brown Alligator The fused strap of this SBSA027 is very flexible thanks to the silicone construction. However, the casual nature of the silicone is made more formal by a brown component that is stitched on top of the strap. This component is embossed to appear to be alligator hide but it is almost certainly not genuine alligator. The strap wears very comfortably and, in my opinion, achieves the goal of making a sports watch look more formal. 08:28 Seiko 4R36 Movement Since this Seiko SBSA027 has a crystal caseback, we have visual access to the self-winding 4R36 movement that powers the watch. This movement boasts: - 41-hour power reserve - Day-date complication - Hacking seconds function - Wind through crown functionality - 45/-35 seconds/day accuracy Additionally, the movement bridges have an attractive brushed finish and a branded winding rotor that make it pleasing to look at up close. (Forgot to mention earlier - the crystal on this watch is a shatter-proof Seiko Hardlex crystal) Questions or comments? Let me know below!
