The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (best English translation is by Michael Glenny). The Master and Margarita although is a very complicated novel it does have a relatively simple narrative, that reflects back on itself - reminding you as you progress of the story thus far, so you don’t need to go back constantly checking to see what you have read, you can simply read on to the end. (If however you do get confused with all these Russian names as to who is who, then the epilogue is like that found in a detective story, a summing up and reminder of who is who).
