While the tune has become most popular as the Tetris theme, the original folk song is about a young woman meeting a merchant and haggling over goods as a metaphor for courtship. It was based on a poem by Nikolay Nekrasov, with a peasant girl being courted by a peddler in a rye field. After offering her some of his goods in return for a kiss, and he pledges to marry her after finishing his next day in the market. ▶ Sheet music:
