Live Aid Festival - An Historic and Influential Event
The Live Aid concert was a historic and influential event that took place on July 13, 1985. It was organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in response to the famine crisis in Ethiopia, particularly in the region of Tigray, which was experiencing extreme food shortages and a devastating humanitarian crisis.
Bob Geldof, the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats, was deeply moved by a news report about the famine in Ethiopia and felt compelled to take action. He enlisted the help of Midge Ure, the lead singer of Ultravox, and together they initiated the idea of a large-scale benefit concert to raise funds for famine relief.
The Live Aid concert consisted of two simultaneous concerts held in London, England, at Wembley Stadium, and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at JFK Stadium. The concerts were broadcast live around the world, reaching an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion people across 150 countries.
