“If That Day Comes Round“ - original song by The Marsh Family on Gaza and Israel
We had nowhere to put our anger and horror and sadness, except into a song. We know it doesn’t mean anything. And we know that even if miracles do exist, they feel very distant amidst the carnage. It’s the best we could come up with. All there is at the moment is trauma and dead ends, and catastrophic multipolar failures of leadership.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped us to think about our words – for which we take sole responsibility. It meant a huge deal to share exchanges about tone, language, and pronunciation with strangers who helped us to understand fragments of Hebrew and Arabic, and offered their time and patience and imagination – often in circumstances of enormous personal sorrow. We have pasted below our best efforts at a consensus translation of the chorus, and we tried our best (forgive mispronunciations!) to sing of miracles in different voices near the end.
We need an end to war. To occupation. To fear. To the mutilation of children, and the stealing of voices that will never sing, but become forever lost or forever angry. Step back. Stand for peace and light. Find another path, those who can. They are out there, just beyond the horizon of history, blame, and righteousness.

LYRICS:
Under bloodshot skies
Where the smoke plumes rise
We make monsters
We make tears
Crimes no parent could forgive
Lives no child should ever live
Broken families
Wasted years
But if that day comes round
When the fence comes down
Then some moment full of grief could be a start
I would pray so hard
To whatever god
Cos a miracle is brightest in the dark
Yes a miracle is brightest in the dark
No one comes of age
Trapped in history’s rage
Taken hostage
Raised on fears
Every synagogue and mosque
Every witness shares the cost
Every church where prayers seem lost
But if that day comes round
When the fence comes down
Then some moment full of grief could be a start
I would pray so hard
To whatever god
Cos a miracle is brightest in the dark
We’ve seen the hate swell up with every act of war
We’ve seen the faith bleed out with every child that falls
It seems we fell so hard
We broke a Holy Land
Just into shards
So since the guns don’t heal
Since the numbed can’t feel
Since two peoples full of pain are losing heart
Stand for peace and light
Hold your loved ones tight
Cos a miracle is brightest in the dark
المعجزات
ניסים
Yes a miracle is brightest in the dark
