Handel: Passacaille from Sonata in G major Op.5 No.4 | Academy of Ancient Music

Join us at our next concert: The Academy of Ancient Music performs the Passacaille from Georg Frideric Handel’s Sonata in G Major Op.5 No.4, directed by Laurence Cummings. Excerpted from Suonare è danzare, the opening concert of AAM Live 2021, the performance was broadcast in HD from West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge. Handel was a consummate musical recycler, and so it comes as no surprise that the central Passacaille of his Sonata Op.5 No.4 is adapted from the ballet in his opera Radamisto of 1720. Eighteenth century music survived only when performed or (less frequently) printed. An oratorio or opera might never be revived but its melodies didn’t have to die with it. Incorporated into playable, affordable domestic music, they lost none of their magnetism. AAM Live 2021 continues on 14 April 2021 with a programme of music by Dario Castello, Barbara Strozzi and Claudio Monteverdi. To watch this live concert via HD broadcast, visit
