Not knowing if you will return was the common theme of people who went for Hajj in those times. It was only in 1850 that the first steam ship carried pilgrims for Haj. In 1936 Egypt was the first one to start Air Flights for Haj. Before this the travel was by land and pilgrims were generally attacked by Badaoins and their possessions were stolen. Things have changed so much and all for the better. This video captures how far we have come from the ancient times. The number of pilgrims are now in millions and not in thousands. He lived in Indonesia and decided to do one of his first films on Hajj. An event that he knew was of huge significance to the Muslims. It is not exactly sure who funded the project, but his wife was very supportive. Krogers prepared himself for the trip by getting circumcised and learning about the Arab traditions and learning about the Haj from an Ambassador who had performed Hajj 5 times. He also changed his name. It looks like he was able to get into Mecca in 1928. Please share with as many people as you know may be they will see their ancestors in this documentary.
