The Greatest Concert, EVER! Pink Floyd at Ivor Wynne Stadium, Hamilton, Ontario, June 28, 1975
I’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of great bands and classic concerts, including the Rolling Stones, U2, Adele, Bruce, Springsteen, Eagles, Billy Joel, The Who, Elton John, The White Stripes, Linkin Park, the Kings of Leon, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Styx, Rush, Edgar Winter, the Electric Light Orchestra, Chicago, Deep Purple, Rush and even Roger Waters’ The Wall ... but Pink Floyd’s performance at Ivor Wynne Stadium on June 28, 1975 will always remain THE GREATEST CONCERT EVER in my mind.
Why? It was the perfect night, an amazing setting and a great set of music by a band at the height of their creativity. It was both raw and polished. It was the final night in North America on the yet-to-be-released “Wish You Here“ album tour. It was the last time they would play “Echoes“ and “The Dark Side of the Moon“ in its entirety for a North American audience. We were also treated to songs that they were still working on that you had to be there to hear it in that form.
But I think partly what made it so great for me (other than the experience of getting there and getting in to the show), was that it really was two concerts by one band. The first concert was by a band of musicians that were jamming out tunes together, and that didn’t give a shit if the audience was there or not. Very cool to see Pink Floyd in this mode, outside in the bright evening sunlight. The second concert was the full rock concert experience, happening in the dark, with a lightshow, lazers, explosions, the classic spotlight on a disco ball, dry ice, smoke bombs, film projects and of course, an airplane that crashes onto the stage.
I’ve remastered the audio, from an original DAT tape, to provide greater stereo separation, more realistic EQ and all the more modern mixing techniques (compression, limiting, etc.). For the visual, since there is no video of this concert, for the first set, I told the story of my personal experience while displaying stills from the concert. For the second set, I used the 1975 Pink Floyd touring film that played on the circular truss screen for the North American of their tour. Finally for the encore, “Echoes“, I synced up the audio performance with their classic Pompeii no-audience performance.
Please enjoy what, to me, was THE GREATEST CONCERT, EVER!
