“Once Upon a Time in the West“ it is a 1968 film directed by Sergio Leone. It’s an Italian western produced by Paramount Pictures and starring Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards and Charles Bronson. The screenplay was written by Leone and Sergio Donati, from a story devised by Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento.
The original version of the film was 165 minutes long when was released on December 21, 1968. This version was screened in European cinemas, and was a box office success. For the US release May 28, 1969, “Once Upon a Time in the West“ was cut by Paramount up to a duration of 145 minutes, receiving a warm critical mostly negative and failing financially. The film is now considered among the best ever made. In 2009 the film was included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically“ significant.
The music was written by Ennio Morricone under the direction of the director before filming began. As in “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly“, the haunting music contributes to the size of the film and is considered one of the greatest compositions of Morricone.
The film features leitmotivs that relate to each of the main characters (each with their own theme music), as well as the spirit of the American West. Particularly interesting is the voice without words of Italian singer Edda Dell’Orso during the musical theme of Jill.
Leone wanted to have music available and played during the shoot and made to Morricone to compose the soundtrack before shooting and reproduced music in the background for the actors on the set. The soundtrack of the film was published in 1972. In the world were sold about 10 million copies of the album. A remastered and expanded to 27 tracks was published in Italy in November 2005 by GDM.
