Christoph Willibald Gluck – Addio o miei sospiri - Orfeo ed Euridice (1762)
Esme Bronwen Smith, accompanied by Juliane Gallant, sings Orpheus’s aria from Gluck’s opera at HGO’s 2020 concert.
Orfeo is inspired by Amor, the goddess of love, to cast aside his grief and to rescue his beloved Euridice from the underworld.
Addio, addio, o miei sospiri,
Han speme i miei desiri;
Per lei soffrir vo’ tutto,
Ed ogni duolo sfidar.
Veder ben vogl’io l’inferno,
I figli d’Orco vincer,
Quei tutti superar!
Farewell, farewell, my sighs,
Now my desires have hope:
For her I will suffer everything,
And challenge every sorrow.
I will willingly visit Hell
To defeat the sons of its god,
And overcome them all!
