Hürrem Sultan used her allure, cunning and love of poetry to orchestrate a meteoric rise from enslaved concubine to Sultan’s favorite. Suleiman the Magnificent was so devoted to her that he married her and made her his Empress. Once in power so did what she had to do, including prompting murder, to protect her sons and make sure that one of them would succeed their father to become Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
