Building a bridge there therefore proved to be extremely difficult. How difficult the situation was is shown by the legend, which tells of the unsuccessful efforts of the people of Uri to build a mule track through the narrow Schöllenen Gorge and to build a stone bridge at the point where the young Reuss pushes its way through vertical rock faces. In desperation, the Landammann cried: “The devil should build a bridge there!“ Then he appeared and said: “I want to build you a bridge.
