----------------LYRICS--------------
Hey hey mama said the way you move
Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove
Ah, ah, child, way you shake that thing
Gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting.
Hey hey baby when you walk that way
Watch your honey drip, can’t keep away
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh, ah, ah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh, ah, ah.
I gotta roll, can’t stand still
Got a flamin’ heart, can’t get my fill
Eyes that shine, burnin’ red
Dreams of you all through my head
Ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ahhh
Hey, baby, whoa baby, pretty baby
Darlin’ makes ’em do me now
Hey, baby, oh baby, pretty baby
Move me like you’re doin’ now
Didn’t take too long ’fore I found out
What people mean by down and out
Spent my money, took my car
Started tellin’ her friends she gonna be a star
I don’t know, but I been told
A big-legged woman ain’t got no soul
Oh yeah, oh yeah, ah, ah, ah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, ah, ah, ah
All I ask for all I pray
A steady rollin’ woman gonna come my way
Need a woman gonna hold my hand
Tell me no lies, make me a happy man
Ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ahhh.
Ah, yeah!
Writer(s): Robert Anthony Plant, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page
This song’s title is a reference to a nameless strayed black retriever that ran around the Headley Grange (a mansion in Hampshire, England) during recording of the album. The retriever was old but still sexually active like the main character of the song, who has a desperate love desire.
For this song John Paul Jones wanted to use a winding riff and unusual rhythm changes that people could not dance to. Jones wrote the song’s basic riff on the back of a train ticket on his way to a rehearsal at Jimmy Page’s Pangbourne boathouse in 1968. The drums and guitar actually play completely different patterns.
A capella verses of this song were inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s song “Oh Well“. Jimmy Page performed “Oh Well“ with The Black Crowes on their 1999 tour.
John Paul Jones wanted to try Electric Blues on this song. He got that idea after hearing Muddy Waters’ album “Electric Mud“ (1968). As a result “Black Dog“ was an example of the blues-rock track on the album.
