Samuel Maykapar - Valse Mélancolique Op. 16, No. 11
Samuel Maykapar (Dec. 18, 1867 - May 8, 1938) was a Russian romantic composer, pianist, professor, and author.
In 1885, he began studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory while also studying law at St. Petersburg University. He graduated from both in 1891. He’d go on to found his own music school and had concert tours throughout Russia and Germany. In one instance, he performed all 32 Beethoven Sonatas over the course of 7 consecutive nights.
The dynamic markings of this piece proved to be difficult. The constant hairpins and accents were hard to convey convincingly. I’m not quite satisfied with how it turned out, but it’ll do. May have to revisit it in the future.
