In response, in late 1861, France (and other European countries) attacked Mexico to try to force payment of this debt. France decided that it would try to take over and occupy Mexico. France was successful at first in its invasion; however, on May 5, 1862, at the city of Puebla, Mexican forces were able to defeat an attack by the larger French army. In this Battle of Puebla, the Mexicans were led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Although the Mexican army was victorious over the French at Puebla, the victory only delayed the French advance on Mexico City; a year later, the French occupied Mexico. The French occupying forces placed Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico on the throne of Mexico. The French were eventually defeated and expelled in 1867. Maximilian was executed by President Benito Juarez, five years after the Battle of Puebla. El 5 de mayo es una fecha significativa en la historia de México: la Batalla de Puebla. Marca la primera vez que el Ejército Mexicano pudo derrotar a una potencia extranjera mejor preparada como lo fueron los Franceses. La batalla tuvo lugar en la actual ciudad de Puebla de Zaragoza el 5 de mayo de 1862, entre los ejércitos de México y junio de 1861, el Congreso mexicano, a iniciativa del presidente Benito Juárez, había declarado la suspensión por un lapso de dos años del pago de la deuda internacional. España, Inglaterra y Francia, los principales acreedores, protestaron ante esa medida; sin embargo, Inglaterra y España lograron negociar por la vía diplomática los términos y condiciones en los que se pagaría la deuda posteriormente. Napoleón III, gobernante de Francia, decidió invadir México para establecer una monarquía favorable a Europa. Con ese fin, debía disolver el Gobierno Constitucional Juárez y colocar a un rey que respetara su autoridad, eligiendo para ello a Maximiliano de Habsburgo, que no podía aspirar al trono del Imperio Austro-Húngaro. En abril de 1862 los franceses desembarcaron en Veracruz, y emprendieron la campaña militar hacia el centro de la República. La primera batalla importante tuvo lugar en Acultzingo, en el límite de los Estados de Veracruz y Puebla. El héroe de la batalla de Puebla fue el general Ignacio Zaragoza, quién, al final de la batalla, escribió al presidente: “Las armas nacionales se han cubierto de gloria.“
