The first man in space! Exactly 63 years ago, Yuri Gagarin flew around the Earth. The era of manned cosmonautics began from this day. Gagarin launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Vostok-1 spacecraft and landed 108 minutes later in the Saratov Region, Russia.
To millions, the cosmonaut was the embodiment of both Soviet heroism and Russian folk legend: an ordinary village guy turned world hero. Fame, however, didn’t change Yuri, and many claim he stayed the same kind-hearted modest man.
