Another Junkyard Gem | Rotting Rocking Chair Restoration
If you would like to see me restore another rocking chair -
Or if you would like to see a different type of project -
In this week’s repair and restoration video, we tackle another junkyard furniture find to transform it from barf to beauty. I found this moldy, rotting rocking chair in a pile of wet trash and had to let it sit inside for four months to let it dry out before working on it.
The project began with a disassembly as usual. Every piece had to be treated for mold and water stains using vinegar and oxalic acid. I turned two new finials on the wood lathe, fabricated a new rocker end piece, repaired a broken seat back, and fitted new cane to the seat. All of the old finish was removed, everything was cleaned and sanded, and finally the wood was treated with linseed oil and finishing wax. The result is incredible.

The caning kit I purchased was supplied by Peerless Rattan in Michigan. This video is not sponsored by this supplier but they provided great service so I recommend that you talk to them if you want to learn to cane a chair.
