Ipanema Beach is 2.6 km long and is close to the Leblon neighborhood, which complements it. One of the most famous beaches in the city, it is second in popularity only to Copacabana Beach, where the city’s New Year’s Eve is held every year. Ipanema inspired composer Vinícius de Moraes when he released the song “Garota de Ipanema“, for which Tom Jobim was responsible for the melody. In addition to being a traditional meeting point for residents and tourists, the beach is used to practice various sports. Favorite activities include skiboarding, surfing, racquetball, volleyball, football and footvolley. The main beach volleyball championships are broadcast throughout Brazil. The beach is also the stage for open-air shows, which take place at night near the canal that divides the Leblon neighborhood.
