Ships Saved? RMS Queen Mary SS United States

RMS Queen Mary last of the legendary liners of the early 20th Century and the SS United States face an Uncertain Future. The biggest concerns is renovations, repairs and future development for the aging RMS Queen Mary and SS United States. The effort to save the ships is ongoing. Despite her faded appearance, the SS United States remains structurally sound to this day a testament to the design, materials and workmanship that made her the greatest American passenger liner of all time. By the mid-to-late 1960s, owing to the advent of jet-powered airliners, the market for transatlantic travel by ship had dwindled America was sold in 1964, Queen Mary was retired in 1967, and Queen Elizabeth in 1968 and United States was no longer profitable. Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and won the Blue Riband that August; she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938, holding it until 1952 when it was taken by the new SS United States.
