Scarlatti wrote his 555 sonatas for his pupil and patroness, the Portuguese Princess (and later Spanish Queen), Maria Barbara. Both Scarlatti and the Queen were extraordinary harpsichordists and had great improvisational skills. Luis Egidio Meléndez was the greatest Spanish still-life painter of the 18th century.
