Cold weather and coronavirus pandemic rules forced organisers to shorten the event to about 100 minutes. Officials said the opening ceremony has been designed to reduce carbon emissions and features scientific and technological innovations reflecting China’s goal of delivering a “streamlined, safe and splendid” Games to the world. Chinese President Xi Jinping will officiate at the opening ceremony which will be held on the evening of February 4.
