Battalia á 10 paints the many sides of war with vivid colors, from the swashbuckling beginning to the bitter end. Writing in 1673, Biber used bizarre harmonies and extended techniques to evoke the cacophony of soldiers’ drinking songs, the whistle and pop of cannon fire, the battle of dissenting voices, and the lament for the fallen. His music is full of exuberance, irony, and intimate beauty. For us as musicians, Battalia is just as much about human relationships, on the battlefield or in the concert hall:
