Le Cri du Caire blends rock, jazz, sprinkles of oriental flourishes, spoken word, and Sufi poetry and philosophy, the three-piece adorn each room they play in with a rich metaphorical universe transcending identities and borders.

Singer, writer, poet, and expressionist Abdullah Miniawy became, in the wake of the revolution, an artistic emblem for Egypt’s agitated youth. As a writer, his lyrics have left a mark in the Middle East region, notably during the Arab Spring, where they were displayed in places like the Yarmouk camp in Syria. Alongside Peter Corser on the saxophone and Karsten Hochapfel on the cello, he is sure to grip audiences as the complete band.
Their self-titled debut, released in January, serves as a sample of what can be achieved on the stage. Le Cri du Caire won the ‘Album de Musiques du Monde’ award at the Victoires du Jazz for their debut album.
“The virtuoso Sufi chant, whispered or shouted over a carpet of hypnotic loops, leads the listener into a trance-like mystical journey. Spirituality and freedom come together in the same desire for invention and sharing, to carry the hopes of peoples whose voices have been muzzled in the face of political, social and religious oppression.”
