In the height of the pandemic, ganavya and Munir Hossn sent each other voice notes on WhatsApp, unsure when they would see each other. They named this collection of voice notes “sister, idea” after one of Munir’s first voice notes, that started: “sister, idea…” before he played his melody. Months into this process, circumstances brought Munir to Miami, where ganavya was visiting her parents. The duo went into Tony Succar’s studio for a day, and recorded some of these songs for each other. In the album, the duo sing in Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, Farsi, Arabic, and English, as they navigate being there for each other across seas.
In “esperança,” ganavya and Munir sing of hope, of the lessons to be learned from those who live with the earth, of how each morning gives renewed possibility, that with each rising of the sun we can bring warmth into our hearts, no matter how difficult the night has been.
