The first thirteen songs are based on poems by Pushkin (1, 3, 5), Korinfsky (2), Balmont (4), Khomyakov (6), Maykov (7), Polonsky (8, 13), Tyutchev (9, 10) and Fet (11, 12). No. 14, known as Vocalise, is the most famous of the set and has been arranged for piano solo, orchestra, solo instrument with piano accompaniment and many other. The most peculiar is the one for guitar by Slash, Guns N’ Roses’ main guitarist. Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a Russian (naturalised American, following the Russian Revolution) composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period. His style is notable for song-like melodicism, expressiveness and rich orchestral colours.
