Kookaburra facts: the terrestrial kingfisher | Animal Fact Files
Does kookaburra live in the old gum tree? These birds are terrestrial kingfishers but they don’t generally eat fish as their family name would suggest. There are four kookaburra species and they’re found throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea, though they’ve also been introduced outside of the native ranges. Kookaburras are known as the laughing birds, though really only one species makes the iconic laughing trill. The other three species make rolling squawks, but they don’t quite reach the laugh like the laughing kookaburra.
