Back in 2008 I produced my first work, an unofficial music video for a song called plyPhon, from the famous British electronic music duo Autechre.
I can tell I was heavily influenced by the aestethic of Alex Rutterford’s own Autechre video masterpiece Gantz Graf, but I was also willing to create an even more radical audiovisual experience in which every single 3d element could be directly linked to some the soundtrack various elements. In other words I attempted to create an extremely accurate 3d visual score of the song. The song structure was very fit for the purpose.
The result was this quite crazy music video done in one single camera shot. In its accuracy between visual and audio the work still looks good to me today I think. I remember it as a very fun exercise of audioanalysis! All the soundtrack was analyzed and broke down by listening, headphones and pencil on paper (lots of sheets!), everything was animated manually, no automated processes of any sort were used in the making.
After that video I managed to build a career as filmmaker and visual artist. I had the possibility (and luck!) to work with many extremely talented artists, collaborate with big brands, constantly learning new things, tour important festivals and be in various places around the world.. so I can sincerely say it’s been a great time for me from then.
During the years lots of people asked me if I would ever consider to render again this work in a higher resolution than the original, which was 800x340 (quite ridiculous for present day standards, but required a lot of rendering effort at the time!). I thought about the possibility in the past but never really got the right occasion to do it. Now, 12 years later, I decided to take some time (and money) to reopen and rework the project, throw it into a renderfarm and publish it again, this time in brand new 4K 24 fps video!
I tried some little improvement in post with colors, added depth of field, improved/replaced animation on some part (like in the intro or the bridge at 1:50), but the overall video comes very much from all the original material. It’s been so fun getting back to work at the 2008 files! I still remembered almost everything.
So I hope everyone could enjoy the new version!
