The royal commission found that one First Nations person died while incarcerated every 11 days. In 38% of deaths medical care was required but not given. Of all deaths there have been no criminal convictions made against the perpetrators. Agencies failed to follow all their own procedures in 41% of cases where First Nations people died. 99 First Nations people died in custody from 1980 to 1989. Over 60% of Māori have experienced discrimination in their lifetime. Māori make up 52% of the prison population but only 16 percent of New Zealand’s total population. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders make up only 3% of Australia’s population. Indigenous Australian’s make up 29% of the current prison population. #aboriginal-and-torres-strait-islander-prisoners Māori are sent to prison more often than Pākehā for the same crime. #/ Indigenous men are 15 times more likely to be in custody.
