Double Dragon 3: The Arcade Game (Genesis) - Playthrough

A playthrough of Flying Edge’s 1993 beat ’em up for the Sega Genesis, Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone. Flying Edge’s port of Double Dragon 3 for the Genesis faced an uphill battle from the start given the dubious quality of the original arcade game upon which it is based. Whereas the other versions were merely based on the 1990 coin-op, the Genesis game is the only direct conversion of it, and to be fair it’s an excellent port. However, like the old saying goes: Garbage in, garbage out. The gameplay is an ugly, twisted shadow of that in the first two Double Dragons - though the exploitative “pay credits for moves“ feature has been buffed out, the enemies are absolutely merciless. The difficulty level sits firmly in cheap and unfair territory - enemies generally have much longer reach than you do and and counter nearly everything you throw at them, leaving you with little choice but to rely on getting them snagged on the scenery to do damage. Thanks to the problematic controls, many moves are hard to consistently pull off, and making matters worse, weapons are generally useless as they’ll be knocked away before you can get a hit in. And if you go down in a crowd, there’s a good chance you aren’t going to be let back up again before the bad guys chew through a full life or two. On the plus side, the graphics and sound are a bit of an improvement on the arcade game’s, though they really should have still been better - DD3 originally came out in arcades just a bit after Final Fight. It looked badly dated in 1990, and unsurprisingly, it doesn’t fare much better by 1992 standards. If you want to play a somewhat playable game based on Double Dragon 3, I’d recommend the NES game. Being done by Technos themselves, it’s the vastly superior title. I really try to see the good side of any game I play, but I don’t know how else to say it.
