The death toll from a highway collapse in the early hours of May 1, 2024 in southern China has risen to at least 48, according to Chinese state media, with dozens more rushed to hospital. The landslide, which left a nearly 18-metre-long (59ft) crater on the highway linking the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian, happened on the first day of the long Labour Day holiday on the mainland. It is the latest disaster to hit Guangdong in recent weeks, after the region was pummelled by flash floods and a deadly tornado.
