How to Sketch Places Quickly

The goal of this lesson, and others from my ’Sketching Places Quickly’ course is to help you reduce a scene down to it’s most basic elements, whilst still capturing the essence of the place. Working from reference photos is great practice for transitioning to outdoors, where you’ve got the elements working against you, as well a nosey passers-by! If you want to have a go at this exercise, you’ll find a link to the reference photo in the description. The challenge is to draw the scene 3 times on the stopwatch, with each attempt faster than the one previous. The target time for the first attempt should be no more than 20-25 minutes. By the third sketch you should be aiming for 15 minutes. Although I’ve speeded the video up slightly in some parts, it only reduced the total time of this lesson by a couple of minutes. Without commentary, I completed this sketch a second time in 16 minutes. Enjoy and let me know how you get on in the comments below!
