Japanese Kimono Folding Instructions | Itchiku Kubota Art Museum
The Itchiku Kubota art museum has created an instructional video showing how Japanese kimonos are folded, wrapped and stored to help care for your kimonos. The Japanese kimono is one of the world’s instantly recognisable traditional garments. The word kimono literally means “clothing“, and up until the mid 19th century it was the form of dress worn by everyone in Japan.
Please prepare
- A clean blue tarpaulin sheet
- 3-4 large sheets of paper
2 people are required
- Please wear white overalls, masks & gloves
Kimono folding instructions:
Place the kimono on the paper and turn it upside down with inner side facing up, ensuring the fabric is not wrinkled.
Fold shitamae, the inner layer with the seal, along the line of migoro. Then fold uwamae, the outer layer without the seal, along the line of the migoro. Check for wrinkles.
Fold the sleeves, first the right and then the left. Make sure to fold straight by placing them along the lines of mig
