This educational film produced by the Ministry of Education of the USSR looks at the different applications of nuclear technology. (Ironically, it appears to have been released the same year as the Chernobyl disaster!) The film begins with a look at different types of nuclear reactors, including experimental ones like plasma reactors. This is followed by other applications such as in nuclear bombs or to power ships. The end of the film seeks to show the USSR pursues peaceful nuclear research, by contrasting footage of the US bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with peace protests in the USSR and Warsaw Pact countries. 0:11 “Nuclear Reactors”, 0:14 an animation of the inside of a nuclear power plant including close ups of the reactor, the graphite cores, neutron reflectors, and control rods, 1:25 a real nuclear reactor, 1:33 a model of a nuclear reactor with flashing lights, 2:01 a model of a water reactor and close up animations of how it works, 2:30 “Thermonuclear Reactions”, 2:34 animation of atoms and how they split in an atomic reaction, 3:10 an animation of a thermonuclear bombs, the elements it contains, and how an explosion is triggered, 3:46 an early Soviet plasma reactor, 3:53 an animation of radiation in space moving around a star, 4:10 atomic reaction needed for plasma, 4:28 animation of how plasma can be directed with electricity and moved within a superconducting magnetic field, 5:02 animation of a plasma reactor working, 5:40 animation of how to create an atomic reaction with lasers, 6:36 “Applications of Nuclear Energy”, 6:40 newspaper article about the first Soviet Nuclear Power Plant followed by footage from it, 7:14 a nuclear powered ice breaker followed by an animation of how the reactor powers the steam generator of the ship, 8:10 footage intended to show the US nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki followed by images of the destruction caused, 8:54 footage from peace protests in the Soviet Union, 9:06 an underground nuclear test in Nevada, 9:27 footage from the inside and outside of a nuclear power plant, 9:46 credits begin rolling, 10:02 “By Order of the Ministry of Education of the USSR” We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
