In reverse chronological order, starting with the 1960 Studio recording. I think my favourite is the 1955 Scala performance. Then again, the Mexico performance is special as it was the Mexican audience’s very first taste of La Divina. The excitement must have been something else!

NORMA
Oh, do not let them be victims
of my cruel mistake --
oh, do not cut them down
in the innocence of childhood.
Remember that I am your blood,
have pity on my children.
Oh father, have pity,
have pity on my children.
CHORUS
She weeps! She prays -- but what hope has she?
Her prayers will be rejected.
Tear from her brow the sacred wreath,
place upon her the veil of death!
NORMA
Father, you weep...
OROVESO
My heart is oppressed!
NORMA
You weep, you forgive.
OROVESO
Love conquered!
