Verdi’s Requiem - La Jolla Symphony and Chorus

(Visit: ) Giuseppe Verdi composed his “Messa da Requiem“ in memory of writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi greatly admired. This monumental work for four vocal soloists, double chorus and orchestra premiered in Milan in 1874, with Verdi himself conducting. Though the Requiem enjoyed contemporary success it disappeared from the concert repertoire for a time, before being revived in the 1930s. It is now the most frequently performed major choral work, and is regarded (along with Mozart’s Requiem) as the supreme composition in that genre. Recorded on 3/19/2017. Series: “La Jolla Symphony & Chorus“ [5/2017] [Arts and Music] [Show ID: 31844]
