DEVIL from PULCINELLA (Clifford - Stravinsky/Balanchine)

A little PULCINELLA story. Balanchine’s 1972 ballet for the historic 1st NYC Ballet Stravinsky Festival (with additional choreography by Jerome Robbins) was not a big success with the critics, although it went over very well with the public. Here are excerpts of myself as the Devil 👿 when it was filmed in Berlin in 1973. (Bad copy of Italian TV broadcast.) This role was choreographed on Francisco Moncion, but when he was suddenly unavailable for this filming Balanchine threw me on with a one day notice. I learned the role as we shot it, and Balanchine put in more dancing for me in that last variation. Edward Villella was PULCINELLA and Carol Sumner is his girlfriend, (I love her expressions). Sets and costumes by Eugene Berman. Masks by Kermit Love; so whoever said Mr. B didn’t like sets and costumes doesn’t know what they’re talking about. It all depended on the ballet. Villella, during a company meeting, didn’t want us to go because he said we weren’t going to be paid enough.
