Unique Angle | Queen’s Park 4-6 Celtic | Pre-season Goal Fest at City Stadium!
Celtic’s final pre-season match before their much-anticipated trip to the USA turned out to be a free-scoring game, with Brendan Rodgers’ men beating Queen’s Park 6-4 after an entertaining 90 minutes.
The match started at a good pace with Queen’s Park looking to put the Celtic defence under pressure early on but it was the Premiership champions who produced the first effort on target, with Kyogo’s effort from inside the box forcing a good save from Ferrie.
And in the sixth minute, Kyogo opened the scoring. His through ball to Odin Holm ricocheted back into his path just inside the box, and the Japanese forward sent it underneath the keeper and into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
However, the home side soon levelled the match after the ball broke to forward Ruari Paton who drove the ball past Scott Bain and into the bottom corner.
And with 22 minutes played, Queen’s Park took the lead. After some good play on the right wing from the hosts, Jack Turner found Dom Thomas in the box, and the attacking midfielder curled his shot into the net to give his side a 2-1 lead.
The first half goal-fest continued only a few moments later when Mikey Johnston slipped the ball to Yuki Kobayashi on the edge of the area. The Japanese defender’s shot was goal-bound, but a deflection from Kyogo ensured that the Queen’s Park keeper had no chance of keeping it out, and the game was level again.
Johnston was causing the home side’s defence a lot of problems and just before the 40-minute mark, the winger’s dangerous cross in to the box was turned in to the path of Matt O’Riley.
The midfielder, who wore the captain’s armband in the first half, swept the ball into the net at the first attempt to make it 3-2 to the Celts at the break.
Brendan Rodgers made three changes at half time, with Scott Bain, Matt O’Riley and Mikey Johnston all making way for Benjamin Siegrist, Kwon and Thomas Hatton.
Kyogo soon bagged his hat-trick and made it four goals in two games when he found himself on the end of a good ball from Holm which he duly dispatched beyond the keeper to make it 4-2.
The Hoops’ boss then made a number of changes, bringing off every outfield player (minus Kwon and Hatton) and replacing them with fresh legs.
And Hyeongyu Oh was the next Celt to get his name on the scoresheet. The South Korean forward fired a good shot through a defender’s legs and into the net give the Bhoys a 5-2 lead.
Queen’s Park reduced the deficit through Louis Longridge who looked to be offside as he lifted the ball over Siegrist to give his side their third goal of the night.
But the Celts soon restored their three-goal advantage. This time Oh turned provider, finding Francis Turley with a cut-back in to the penalty area, and the young midfielder tucked it away to it 6-3 to the Hoops with 73 minutes played.
However, the scoring wasn’t finished and in the 85th minute, Queen’s Park got their fourth of the evening after Tyrece McDonnell’s header was judged to have crossed the line.
The match ended 6-4 to Brendan Rodgers’ side, who will now turn their attention to their upcoming trip to the USA where they will face DC United, Manchester City and Chelsea.
